A new suite for advanced cardiac care treatment

Hollywood Hospital is the only hospital in the southern hemisphere to offer Hybrid Catheter Ablation and Surgical Ablation (HyCASA), a treatment for long-standing atrial fibrillation.

The hospital’s Angiography Suite has now expanded to four cardiac procedure rooms, and a new 15-bed day surgery unit accommodates a variety of cardiac and vascular procedures. The facility now has its own entrance, holding bays, and waiting area.

Having worked with Ramsay Health Care on a variety of successful projects over the past 40 years, Cooper & Oxley has a track record of success in the healthcare sector. The project represents another piece of vital medical infrastructure for the Hollywood Hospital campus.

A strategic approach to managing risk and disruption

The project scope incorporated the hospital expansion of the existing Angiography Catheterisation Laboratories on the campus by enlarging the waiting, holding, and recovery areas and constructing an additional Cath Lab.

Cooper & Oxley’s approach included clearly identifying handover requirements within the construction programme from the outset and allowing sufficient time for Licensing and Accreditation Regulatory Unit (LARU) shutdowns, notice periods, and commissioning.

To ensure impacts were minimised and delays avoided, Cooper & Oxley planned windows for any disruptive works, arranged isolation permits for major shutdowns, and installed appropriate hoardings to mitigate noise and dust transmission.

Managing supply chains, coordination, and compliance in construction

COVID-19 impacts required proactive risk management, with early and frequent communication with stakeholders. Cooper & Oxley prioritised early procurement of plant and equipment, engaged reputable subcontractors and suppliers, and reprogrammed the works to avoid delays in manufacturing and shipping.

Working within a live hospital environment, the project was further complicated by soffit heights constrained by the existing structure. The team explored alternative solutions through the use of 3D modelling and coordinated problem-solving workshops with subcontractors and consultants.
